Early-onset spinal deformities are a wide group of scoliosis that occur before age 10. If not treated, they may evolve to a thoracic insufficiency syndrome. These types of scoliosis can be classified in four separate groups due to: congenital deformity, neuromuscular, syndromic and idiopathic scoliosis. It is crucial to have an early diagnosis, independently of the type of cause, in order to start the proper treatments and avoid thoracic insufficiency syndrome onset.

Abstract

Early-onset spinal deformities are a wide group of scoliosis that occur before age 10. If not treated, they may evolve to a thoracic insufficiency syndrome. These types of scoliosis can be classified in four separate groups due to: congenital deformity, neuromuscular, syndromic and idiopathic scoliosis. It is crucial to have an early diagnosis, independently of the type of cause, in order to start the proper treatments and avoid thoracic insufficiency syndrome onset.
