Abstract

The transport of solid particles by a turbulent fluid flow is a complex situation ubiquitous in nature. Sediment transport controls the morphological process in rivers, estuaries and coastal oceans. The presence of bedforms (see Fig. 4.1) can highly influence water levels during flood events through a modification of the equivalent bottom roughness and this phenomenon still needs to be properly addressed for reliable flood predictions. In coastal engineering, the Dutch Sand Engine project which started in 2011 (total cost of 50 millions euros) consists in a mega beach nourishment experiment of 21 million m3 of sand to prevent and remediate coastal erosion and retreat of the coastline. © CISM International Centre for Mechanical Sciences 2024.
