This study aims to explore gender policies in the Italian academic context, focusing on recent changes such as the adoption of Gender Equality Plans and the implementation of gender budgets in Italian universities. Using the Critical Frame Analysis methodology, significant policy documents for gender equality in the academic field are analyzed. The objective is to understand the narrative proposed by these documents and compare it with the characteristics of gender mainstreaming identified in international and Italian literature. The academic context exhibits various gender disparities, and the research focuses on individual, relational, organizational, systemic, institutional, and cultural factors that contribute to these disparities. The analysis of the documents highlights how they contribute to constructing the concept of gender in the academic field, consequently defining what gender equality is and creating a hierarchy among possible situations and desired outcomes
