This study focuses on the vocabulary referring to Christ, particularly the epithets that highlight His dual nature, both human and divine, in Nonnus of Panopolis’ (5th century) poetic Paraphrase of the Gospel of John. It aims to illuminate the literary and theological mechanisms through which Christ is portrayed as both man-God and God-man in late antique Greek literature and contemporary theology. The poet generally employs terms denoting Christ’s divinity to temper His human traits, especially when addressing figures unaware of His true nature. This ambivalent usage can be understood within the broader context of debates between Christian orthodoxy and heterodoxy, presenting a poetic interpretation through which Nonnus aligns with the Christological readings of the Alexandrian Church - particularly in the tradition of Cyril of Alexandria’s commentary on the Gospel of John - while situating his work within the wider cultural and intellectual milieu of Late Antiquity.

Abstract
This study focuses on the vocabulary referring to Christ, particularly the epithets that highlight His dual nature, both human and divine, in Nonnus of Panopolis’ (5th century) poetic Paraphrase of the Gospel of John. It aims to illuminate the literary and theological mechanisms through which Christ is portrayed as both man-God and God-man in late antique Greek literature and contemporary theology. The poet generally employs terms denoting Christ’s divinity to temper His human traits, especially when addressing figures unaware of His true nature. This ambivalent usage can be understood within the broader context of debates between Christian orthodoxy and heterodoxy, presenting a poetic interpretation through which Nonnus aligns with the Christological readings of the Alexandrian Church - particularly in the tradition of Cyril of Alexandria’s commentary on the Gospel of John - while situating his work within the wider cultural and intellectual milieu of Late Antiquity.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
