In the contemporary context, marked by wicked problems, the necessity to foster approaches of empathy and critical thinking in society appears to emerge as a response to such complexity. This paper explores this phenomenon, focusing particularly on how it manifests within design disciplines, and proposes representation as a key element to trigger an increasingly necessary change. Specifically, attention is directed to the potential of speculative visions –practices of visualizing future scenarios through various forms of representation– proposed as a possible means to stimulate critical and empathetic thinking in design con- texts. By combining imagery and narrative through èkphrasis – understood as a bridge between languages and modes of representation – two complementary uses of speculative visions are examined. The first, inside-out, focuses on visions directed at an audience, using digital media to foster empathy and understanding by translating complex issues. The second, outside-in, involves the use of speculative visions to activate self-reflective processes, such as in the training of designers, encouraging critical reflection on the implications of design practices. Speculative visions thus become tools to promote critical thinking and empathy, both in and through design, for the construction of more inclusive and sustainable futures.

Abstract
Speculative visions thus become tools to promote critical thinking and empathy, both in and through design, for the construction of more inclusive and sustainable futures.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
