Abstract

Analysing the historical evolution of yacht interiors, a field still largely unexplored, it becomes evident that the physical and conceptual boundaries of these spaces were long well-defined. For decades, small portholes, limited windows, and enclosed layouts characterised yacht design, creating sheltered environments where owners and guests could feel protected and at ease. Over the past twenty years, however, this paradigm has shifted towards a near-erasure of interior-exterior divisions. In large motor yachts over 100 feet, expansive windows transform cabins into stages overlooking the sea, enhancing visual and emotional engagement with the surrounding environment. Structural innovations, such as retractable topsides and superstructures, allow exterior and interior spaces to merge, while pocket doors create fluid connections between them. The increasing use of transparent surfaces and variable geometries has also redefined onboard functionality, particularly on deck areas, where stern sections now open out to form expansive ‘beach clubs’ directly interacting with the sea. This transformation is not merely aesthetic but deeply experiential. The evolv-ing relationship between interior yacht design and the marine environment fosters a multisensory experience, engaging sight, sound, and even scent to create a more immersive connection with nature. Through key historical case studies, this paper examines the dissolution of traditional interior boundaries, analysing the motivations, technological advance-ments, and design strategies that have redefined yacht interiors. Ultimately, it highlights how contemporary yacht design enables an organic, fluid interaction between interior spaces and the external seascape, reshaping the onboard living experience.
