A discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) technique is presented to enhance the efficiency of an AC-DC matrix based buck converter. A new modulation scheme is developed to ensure proper converter operation in DCM preventing input current distortion. System performance in terms of total harmonic distortion (THD) including comparison with continuous conduction mode (CCM) operation is examined experimentally. Conduction and switching losses under different grid voltage in both modes are compared via simulation.
