The European Union (EU) stands at a historic crossroads, with its future depending not only on strategic responses to global challenges but also on its ability to deepen its fundamental values. This chapter argues that the EU can preserve and strengthen its democratic and political foundations only by embedding the principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion at the core of its policy framework. These principles must be grounded in a commitment to respecting cultural differences, upholding shared values, and promoting unity through pluralism. Building an inclusive Europe requires more than economic recovery or technological leadership; it demands inclusive innovation, socially responsible growth, and meaningful citizen participation. Addressing these values alongside the responsibility for innovation offers the EU a unique opportunity to foster social cohesion. As the Union moves towards a digital and green future, its ability to become a truly global democratic actor depends on policies that promote fairness, ownership, and collective well-being for all. Drawing on the authors' extensive experience and by examining relevant research and projects in Europe on equality, diversity, and inclusion, the chapter introduces the concept of establishing a stable and robust assessment of societal readiness levels within the European research and innovation landscape.
