Alternative or complementary? A critical mapping of crowdsourcing practices to respond to emergencies in Italy. The role of geotechnologies has been growing exponentially in civil protection practices, and voluntary geography is a valuable support for institutional response systems. In addition, the shift from real to virtual space has shaped the way volunteering in emergencies is conceived, offering citizens more possibilities and opportunities to contribute and interact in the post-disaster. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to understand how these practices are applied in emergencies and how they relate to the governance systems. Starting with a first analysis of some crowdsourcing experiences developed in recent years in Italy, the contribution illustrates how voluntary geography can help in managing spatial relations between different stakeholders and improve emergency response mechanisms. The discrepancy between bottom-up and top-down approaches is often at the basis of conflict situations, which can have significant consequences on the effectiveness of emergency response and management actions.

Abstract
The discrepancy between bottom-up and top-down approaches is often at the basis of conflict situations, which can have significant consequences on the effectiveness of emergency response and management actions.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
