Despite their inclusion in classical rhetoric, interjections are considered an eccentric word class. This study examines the categorisation of interjections in various linguistic resources and their impact on metalinguistic understanding. The analysis covers the latest Duden grammar (2022), the IDS portal Grammis, Duden online and the DWDS dictionary. On the one hand, the definitions and treatment of the word class interjection were compared, and on the other hand, the categorisations of the lemmas or words categorised as interjections were analysed. Possible distinctions from the parts of speech particle and onomatopoeia are also discussed. In addition, research was carried out in the corpus of the Archive for Spoken German of the Leibniz Institute for the German Language (Mannheim) in order to investigate interjections in authentic conversation data. The article is rounded off with a brief didactic outlook: examples and evidence from comics, dictionaries and language atlases are intended to promote a metalinguistic understanding of the conventionality of interjections and their place in the dynamics of vocabulary.
