The phenomenon of overtourism represents one of the most evident critical issues of contemporary tourism. Far beyond the mere excess of visitors, the term refers to a set of economic, social, cultural, and environmental tensions that call into question the very sustainability of current models of tourism development. This volume proposes a multidisciplinary approach to overtourism, weaving together perspectives from law, economics, geography, psychology, and history. The collected contributions explore its causes and manifestations, analyse the public policies and governance practices adopted in the most exposed destinations, and reflect on possible pathways for transitioning towards a more equitable, aware, and sustainable form of tourism. The book originates from the workshop Did they decide wrong? The role of public policies in local tourism development processes (University of Genoa, 31 January 2025), organised within the framework of the PRIN 2022 project What went wrong? A retrospective analysis of destination policies in overtouristed hotspots. Through theoretical analyses and practice-oriented reflections, the volume offers a multifaceted and critical interpretation of a topic at the forefront of current debate, and invites readers to rethink tourism as a space of shared responsibility and an opportunity to imagine new ways of inhabiting and moving through the world.
