The essay examines an episode narrated by the Pavia cleric Opicino de Canistris in his autobiography, which is part of the manuscript Pal. Lat. 1993 in the Vatican Apostolic Library. During his stay in Genoa between 1316 and 1318, he had a terrible dream about the Last Judgement. It is hypothesised that this dream, like another one that the author recounts later, during his stay in Avignon, transfigures the experience of seeing a work of art that was particularly compelling for its spiritual meanings and its “public” significance.

Abstract
The essay examines an episode narrated by the Pavia cleric Opicino de Canistris in his autobiography, which is part of the manuscript Pal. Lat. 1993 in the Vatican Apostolic Library. During his stay in Genoa between 1316 and 1318, he had a terrible dream about the Last Judgement. It is hypothesised that this dream, like another one that the author recounts later, during his stay in Avignon, transfigures the experience of seeing a work of art that was particularly compelling for its spiritual meanings and its “public” significance.File in questo prodotto:
