“Prohibition” Italian style: some notes on medical and legal culture in the struggle against alcohol between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries

The essay analyzes the role of legal and medico-social culture in defining alcoholism as both a pathology and a social problem, focusing on the difficulties involved in translating these conceptual advances into effective legislation. Particular attention is devoted to the Italian reception of U.S. prohibitionism within the scientific and political debate of the immediate postwar period.

Il saggio analizza il ruolo della cultura giuridica e medico-sociale nella definizione dell’alcolismo come patologia e problema sociale, soffermandosi sulle difficoltà di tradurre tali acquisizioni in una normativa efficace. Particolare attenzione è riservata alla ricezione italiana del proibizionismo statunitense nel dibattito scientifico e politico del primo dopoguerra.
