This article investigates a teaching experience involving students enrolled in the French Language course within the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Language and Translation at the University of Turin. Data gathered during experimental lessons and through two questionnaires (administered at the beginning and end of the course) reveal how the use of neural machine translation (NMT) enhances learners’ understanding of both the challenges posed by translation tasks and the limitations of NMT systems. The teaching methodology is grounded in translation studies that examine the interaction between learner-translators and translation technologies. The analysis of end-of-course data provides a basis for broader pedagogical reflection, underscoring the need to revise curricula. Such revisions should aim to empower learners to play an active and conscious role in the learning process by effectively integrating machine translation tools.
