Translating a metalinguistic essay is inherently complex and even risky, especially when it deals with non-standard language varieties. In this case, the difficulty arises from two main factors. First, the translators, aimed—following Skopos theory—to make the original French text accessible to a non-French-speaking audience. This is challenging because much of the original consists of analyses of non-standard language. Second, the complexity also stems from deep sociolinguistic differences between Italian and French, as well as from the parallel development of research on non-standard writing in the two countries, which has focused on partly different objects and adopted distinct perspectives and terminology.

Abstract

Translating a metalinguistic essay is inherently complex and even risky, especially when it deals with non-standard language varieties. In this case, the difficulty arises from two main factors. First, the translators, aimed—following Skopos theory—to make the original French text accessible to a non-French-speaking audience. This is challenging because much of the original consists of analyses of non-standard language. Second, the complexity also stems from deep sociolinguistic differences between Italian and French, as well as from the parallel development of research on non-standard writing in the two countries, which has focused on partly different objects and adopted distinct perspectives and terminology.
