Abstract
Did secret services exist in the ancient world, particularly during the Roman era? And if so, what were they called? Could their activities be likened in any way to modern intelligence operations? Some 2,500 years ago, the Chinese Taoist sage Sun Tzu wrote in *The Art of War* that foresight is the key to success in conflict—and that it is achieved only through men capable of penetrating the enemy's secrets and subduing them without a fight. In the Roman world, this imperative of absolute secrecy became an essential political and military pillar, aptly summarized by the drastic warning of Sextus Julius Frontinus, who stated in his *Military Stratagems*: "If my tunic could speak, I would set it on fire."I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
