In his On the Genealogy of Morals (1887) Nietzsche develops this question: what were the techniques employed to turn the man of vital instincts into a man capable of adapting to social life? According to Nietzsche, the invention of responsibility and punishment was decisive. This is how the man who “remembers”, who makes promises, who commits to the future was constructed: the uniform man, equal among equals, consistent with the rule and therefore “predictable”.

Abstract

In his On the Genealogy of Morals (1887) Nietzsche develops this question: what were the techniques employed to turn the man of vital instincts into a man capable of adapting to social life? According to Nietzsche, the invention of responsibility and punishment was decisive. This is how the man who “remembers”, who makes promises, who commits to the future was constructed: the uniform man, equal among equals, consistent with the rule and therefore “predictable”.
