Could we have a digital transition that is also an ecological transition? The answer can be affirmative if we understand the environmental costs of digital systems, intelligent or not, which permeate contemporary life and their operation: the telecommunication infrastructures and the data centres. Our habits with digital devices makes us insensitive to their impact in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, consumption of electricity, exploitation of non-renewable resources and production of electronic waste. All these are effects that often remain invisible to our eyes, because the digital sector has never really worried about avoiding or reducing them.

Abstract
Could we have a digital transition that is also an ecological transition? The answer can be affirmative if we understand the environmental costs of digital systems, intelligent or not, which permeate contemporary life and their operation: the telecommunication infrastructures and the data centres. Our habits with digital devices makes us insensitive to their impact in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, consumption of electricity, exploitation of non-renewable resources and production of electronic waste. All these are effects that often remain invisible to our eyes, because the digital sector has never really worried about avoiding or reducing them.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
