The present study examines the relationship between the saint and his urban and rural environment during a period of great distress, namely the so called Justinianic plague. The article focuses on three 6th century saints’ lives – the Life of Nichola of Sion, the Life of Symeon Stylites the Younger and the Life of Symeon the Holy Fool – highlighting both the proximity and the distance of these saints in relation to the urban context.
