Lectio Difficilior in Myth: Textual Misfortune of a Forgotten Character The article aims to reconstruct and compare the textual problems arising in the sources transmitting the name of Aerope. By systematically examining the variants and conjectures present in the vast majority of Latin occurrences, it becomes evident that the transmission of mythological proper names is strongly influenced by its recognizability, a factor that undergoes significant variations over time. Therefore, in the case of lesser-known characters the principle of lectio difficilior can be applied. The pervasive instability characterising the transmission of Aerope’s name must be taken into account when assessing the conjectural interventions that have been proposed for Aelian. var. hist. 14, 40; Quint. inst. 11, 3, 73; Cic. epist. Abstract
The pervasive instability characterising the transmission of Aerope’s name must be taken into account when assessing the conjectural interventions that have been proposed for Aelian. var. hist. 14, 40; Quint. inst. 11, 3, 73; Cic. epist. Quint. 3, 5, 7.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
