¿Sois vos aquel que a morir os conviene? Significados del verbo ‘convenir’ en castellano antiguo

The main purpose of this work is to describe the verb convenir in its contexts, in order to establish the semantic values that it acquired between the thirteenth and the sixteenth centuries. More precisely, in addition to the most well-known and widespread meanings, it will be seen that there is another one, which appears in certain texts of those centuries; here the meaning of the verb is close to the idea of duty or that of an action linked to an inevitable destiny that surpasses individual will. Where the verb convenir acquires this meaning, which is no longer documented in subsequent periods, it’s combined with a restricted group of verbs, especially ‘morir’ or its synonyms, with which it constitutes a sort of collocation. This paper also examines other aspects of convenir, such as its verbal complementation and its connections with other collocations and idioms. The textual corpus investigated is almost entirely based on the Real Academia’s CORDE.
