Giorgio Napolitano's trip to China in August 1984 took place within the context of the resumption of relations between the Italian Communist Party (PCI) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which had long been interrupted. The published documents - Napolitano’s report to the PCI Secretariat and a letter from the Italian ambassador, Raffaele Marras, to Giulio Andreotti - provide an insight into the political and diplomatic dynamics of those years, marked by renewed hostilities between the Soviet Union and the United States. The two sources capture the historical significance of the economic transformation initiated by Deng Xiaoping in the People's Republic of China. They also highlight the role of the Italian communists in Sino-European relations, in the process of international détente and in redefining ties with progressive forces (both socialist and non-socialist) towards the final phase of the PCI’s history.

Abstract
They also highlight the role of the Italian communists in Sino-European relations, in the process of international détente and in redefining ties with progressive forces (both socialist and non-socialist) towards the final phase of the PCI’s history.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
