"Epistemology of critique in Alfred Polgar" · The article focuses on a work by Alfred Polgar – one of the foremost Austrian literary critics of the early 20th century – seemingly dedicated solely to theater: the “Handbuch des Kritikers” from 1938. Without explicit pedagogical intentions, Polgar offers an indirect but profound reflection on human beings and their inner, intellectual and human formation. Polgar does not limit himself to discussing theater but develops a methodology for producing a “critique of the world”. His cultured and ironic language attacks clichés and stereotypes through irreverent considerations on the obvious. In the article, pedagogy operates as a third term of comparison between the other two terms: theater and critique. The Kritiker is who knows how to establish the lines on which to set up a “critique of the critique”: both in the life of the theater and in the theater of life.
