Reading transcends cognitive processes and is deeply intertwined with the emotional, sensory and social dimensions of human experience. This study explores the interplay between text as image and image as text, challenging traditional perceptions and emphasising their shared visual and interpretive roles. Conducted during the pandemic, the study highlights how changing perceptions of time have influenced reading habits and the evolution of reading formats alongside technological advances. Drawing on data from the 2018 ISTAT report and a 2020 survey, the study highlights key trends and challenges, including a decline in reading rates despite a variety of media options. It explores how visual perception, media-specific characteristics and societal changes influence reading preferences. The analysis extends to collective reading practices such as book crossing, illustrating how reading is changing from a solitary activity to a shared, socially impactful phenomenon. The research culminates in the design of a digital application that promotes reading, encourages interaction and strengthens community ties. By removing barriers and harnessing collaborative networks, the project highlights the potential of design to enhance the emotional and cultural significance of reading, while supporting sustainable circular economy principles in the cultural sector.
