Research on the Linguistic Landscape (LL) has predominantly concentrated on synchronic analyses, frequently neglecting its diachronic and historical aspects (cf. Kallen 2023: 219). However, the LL of the past has sometimes been ‘captured’ through photographic and video materials, allowing for the exploration of historical LLs. Given that previous studies on LL representation in video footage have primarily focused on fictional feature-length productions (cf. Badstübner-Kizik 2018), this article seeks to build upon and further develop this line of research. Building on the common emphasis of LL studies on urban spaces (cf. Van Mensel et al. 2016), this paper explores films set and/or shot in Vienna. The study investigates three core questions: (1) What functions does the LL serve in the analyzed films? (2) What types of signs constitute the LL, and how are these linked to its functions? (3) Are there distinctive linguistic features of Austrian German within the represented LL?
