An Ephesian inscription (I.Ephesos II, 419A), dated to 92–93 CE, belongs to a corpus of evidence concerning the construction of hydraulic infrastructure in Ephesus under Domitian. This paper investigates the meaning of the term συναγωγή occurring in the inscription. A widely accepted interpretation takes it as an administrative designation for the board of νεωποιοί of the Artemision, while other scholars understand it as denoting the confluence of the rivers Marnas and Klaseas. On philological grounds, however, this study argues that the more persuasive interpretation is that of a cistern or castellum designed for the collection of water.

Abstract
An Ephesian inscription (I.Ephesos II, 419A), dated to 92–93 CE, belongs to a corpus of evidence concerning the construction of hydraulic infrastructure in Ephesus under Domitian. This paper investigates the meaning of the term συναγωγή occurring in the inscription. A widely accepted interpretation takes it as an administrative designation for the board of νεωποιοί of the Artemision, while other scholars understand it as denoting the confluence of the rivers Marnas and Klaseas. On philological grounds, however, this study argues that the more persuasive interpretation is that of a cistern or castellum designed for the collection of water.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
