From the standpoint of translation history in Latin America, this paper aims to account for the presence of various translations of the work of the Italian writer Silvio Pellico between Europe and Hispanic America in the mid-19th century. Based on this case study, we will argue that in order to explain the circulation of a number of translations of Italian texts and authors in Latin America in that period, it may be necessary to look back at historical processes that were overlooked by the history of translation of the continent, such as the secularization of the political and social space and the history of the conflicts between State and Church in the Hispanic American Catholic republics.

Abstract

From the standpoint of translation history in Latin America, this paper aims to account for the presence of various translations of the work of the Italian writer Silvio Pellico between Europe and Hispanic America in the mid-19th century. Based on this case study, we will argue that in order to explain the circulation of a number of translations of Italian texts and authors in Latin America in that period, it may be necessary to look back at historical processes that were overlooked by the history of translation of the continent, such as the secularization of the political and social space and the history of the conflicts between State and Church in the Hispanic American Catholic republics.
