This article examines Pollution: Per una nuova estetica dell’inquinamento, a multidisciplinary cultural project orchestrated by Gianni Sassi in Bologna (1972), as a critical reflection on the intersections of art, ecology, and capitalism in 1970s Italy. By situating Sassi's exhibition within its historical and socio-political context, the study highlights his innovative use of visual arts, music, and corporate collaboration to challenge prevailing ecological discourses and their commodification within capitalist frameworks. Through an analysis of the exhibition, its theoretical underpinnings, and related initiatives – such as Franco Battiato’s Pollution album and the cultural magazine “Humus” – the article explores Sassi’s radical critique of industrial development and its environmental consequences. The research situates Pollution within broader ecological debates of the era, shedding light on Sassi’s unique approach to fostering cultural and political dialogue through interdisciplinary practices.
Il presente contributo ricostruisce Pollution: Per una nuova estetica dell’inquinamento, un progetto culturale multidisciplinare realizzato da Gianni Sassi a Bologna nel 1972, da intendere come riflessione critica sulle intersezioni tra arte, ecologia e capitalismo nell’Italia degli anni Settanta. Collocando la mostra di Sassi nel suo contesto storico e socio-politico, lo studio mette in evidenza l'uso innovativo delle arti visive, della musica e della collaborazione con il mondo aziendale per ripensare la narrativa relativa all'ecologia e alla sua mercificazione in relazione alle strutture capitalistiche. Attraverso un’analisi della mostra, delle sue basi teoriche e delle iniziative correlate – come l’album Pollution di Franco Battiato e la rivista culturale “Humus” – l’articolo esplora la critica radicale di Sassi allo sviluppo industriale e alle sue conseguenze ambientali. Al contempo, si ricolloca Pollution all'interno dei più ampi dibattiti ecologici dell’epoca, facendo luce sull’approccio unico di Sassi nel promuovere il dialogo culturale e politico attraverso pratiche interdisciplinari.
