Starting with a philological consideration about Calliopian subscriptiones in Terence’s manuscripts, this paper aims to investigate a series of case studies drawn from illustrated codices (9th-15th centuries), and to re-discuss the relationship between text and image in Calliopius’ portraits, whose role oscillates between different vocations.
