Towards a New Global Governance: The Role of the BRICS and their New Development Bank

This essay explores the role of the BRICS countries in shaping a new global governance framework, with a specific focus on the New Development Bank (NDB), established in 2014 as a formal platform for cooperation among these emerging economies. The paper begins by examining the increasing economic role of the BRICS within the global economy and the growing importance of development banks as platforms for international cooperation in the current context of global crisis. It then analyzes the institutional architecture of the New Development Bank and its ongoing process of consolidation. The essay concludes by emphasizing the need for Western countries, particularly the European Union, to engage constructively with this evolving order. It argues that their cultural heritage of subsidiarity and federalism should be leveraged to support the emergence of a new international framework grounded in development, democracy, and equity.
