This contribution arises from an interdisciplinary dialogue between the natural sciences and the historical sciences, with the aim of bringing present and past into relation in order to reflect on the future prospects of small-scale fisheries. The juxtaposition of different languages and approaches seeks to highlight how issues now perceived as new – such as the overexploitation of resources, equity in access, and the need for regulation – have deep roots and can be better understood through an examination of past experience. Building on this perspective, the first part of the article addresses the contemporary reality of small-scale fisheries, laying the conceptual and analytical foundations for the subsequent comparison with the historical dimension.

Abstract
This contribution arises from an interdisciplinary dialogue between the natural sciences and the historical sciences, with the aim of bringing present and past into relation in order to reflect on the future prospects of small-scale fisheries. The juxtaposition of different languages and approaches seeks to highlight how issues now perceived as new – such as the overexploitation of resources, equity in access, and the need for regulation – have deep roots and can be better understood through an examination of past experience. Building on this perspective, the first part of the article addresses the contemporary reality of small-scale fisheries, laying the conceptual and analytical foundations for the subsequent comparison with the historical dimension.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
