The aim of this paper is to reconstruct Od. 19.54 as a Mycenaean hexameter and to project the en-tire line back into the Greek of the second millennium. In fact, some metrical irregularities of Ho-meric verses can be solved through a retrojection to an older linguistic layer. In order to demon-strate this claim, the textual data are compared with Mycenaean tablets, iconographical representa-tions and archeological artifacts (signet rings, furniture) dating back to the late Helladic (Pylos) period.
