The text of the first Spanish Italian dictionary, the Exposición de todos los vocablos dificultosos (1553) by Alonso de Ulloa, is edited here. The Exposición was printed at the end of the Spanish translation of Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso that Jerónimo de Urrea had previously done. The edition also includes many philological or clarifying notes on different issues, related to both the Spanish and the Italian language used in the dictionary. The introduction preceding the annotated edition is devoted to contextualizing Alonso de Ulloa’s work, his activities in Venice in the broad context of the book production in the Republic and to describing the status of lexicography of his time and the sources and the peculiar characteristics of his lexicographic work.
